The Langham, Boston Celebrates Environmental Accomplishments on Earth Day
Boston-based Hotel Saves with Waste ReductionBOSTON - April 19, 2011 – Earth Day, to be held on April 22, illustrates the activation of green movements and a celebration of environmental accomplishments. In one year, The Langham, Boston has implemented operational practices that have achieved a 50 percent reduction in waste stream and a waste removal cost savings of $30,000 under budget.
A recent recipient of EarthCheck Silver Certification, the innovative Downtown Boston luxury hotel was the second lodging property in the United States to achieve the program’s rigorous standards. EarthCheck is the world’s leading sustainable travel and tourism certification organization focused on key environmental indicators such as energy and water consumption, and total waste production.
Sustainable practices include converting kitchen oil into biofuel, implementing a recycling program that converts food waste into compost, and installing an ozone laundry system that eliminates the need for hot water.
“We’ve achieved a program that saves money, conserves energy and water, and encourages colleague participation,” explains The Langham, Boston’s Managing Director Serge Denis. “The cost savings recognized is a testament to environmentally sound efficiencies.”
